I pick relativity to win. They should pop a chute, come down (and in front of Mango), and find them selves in favorable position for a clocking wind.

GAMBLING FOR DOS XX!

Postby SailBRacer » Sun Apr 30, 2006 1:27 pm

John,

I can see it now, with all of this data, they can now have online sailboat gambling, ha.

Idon't think they are allowed to fly a shute? Maybe a drifter or staysail?
If they were allowed a shute they would have been running it the whole way.

Rel hdg 228, ML hdg 231, looks like a convergence on Isla, I think ML has a better angle, not by much, but less current.
Rel 6.6 / ML 7.4 has better boat speed.
If Rel trys to turn down to cut off ML it will be bucking more current and loose boat speed.
ML 68 has water line over Rel 53, so the harder it blows the better ML will do.

All of the leading boats are to deep into the current to make much course change other than the rum line directly to Isla. It is all about boat speed, trimming and helsmen now. Start dumping the water tanks, they can take a shower in Isla, ha.

I believe the distance to finish is incorrect on the Leaderboard? It is hard to tell for sure where the boats really are?

Here is my guess
1st to finish order, not rating correction:

It looks like ML by a mile boat for boat and 50 miles for rating correction.

Rel next, Munequita will correct out over Rel also

Tampa Girl next, real close with Destiny, who will correct out over them.

Destiny next, or possibly in front of TG.

Munequita next, correct out behind ML.

Hallelujah next

Seraphim next

Nobility next,

Reflection next,

Ocean Angel next,

Aventura next,

Mi Veda Loca next,

Seabiscuit next,

That's enough, don't have any idea where several boats are, they may slip in here somewhere, ha.

See Ya.....

Seabiscuit

Postby SailBRacer » Sun Apr 30, 2006 1:52 pm

I want to change my picks, just got a much later position report, looks like Seabiscuit just put on some after burners and passed Mi Vida Loca?

They took a turn to the south more and picked up a better reaching leg, Mi VL needs to turn down, heat it up, pickup better wind and speed and get down south more for a better angle across the north bound current.

Nobility needs to make that turn also to cut out both of them, all though not quite as bad as MiLV.

It looks like a horse race between the 3 of them, hopefully Andy C on Nobility hasn't forgotten about that current from years ago.

See Ya....

mango to win

Postby ev » Sun Apr 30, 2006 2:30 pm

i've been monitoring the whole race. and i believe mango will be the victor. 2 commodore's on that vessel and lots of experience among the rest of the crew will ensure a win!! :D

EV,

I agree, not to mention Joe F on board, normally he might talk them into a flyer like when we sailed on Jazzy, but Cindy is on board and she won't let him do that, ha.

comments, query strategy

Postby eae » Sun Apr 30, 2006 2:53 pm

Thanks for whoever did this beautiful software. The animation to show the successive locations for the entiire race is fabulolus. The wind indicators help in making sense of things is superb, although in recent checks it was not always showing up. on each animation frame

I will experiment to see if this can all be captured on a powerpoint slide.

I think I can do it for the 1x zoom, but it will be tough for the more illuminating 3x and greater.

I hope some of the racers will share with us what was going on at various times when they get back. They can give us the time, what they saw and did, and what the results were. I used to race in a 505 fleet that did this, and we all enjopyed it greatly.

I will be interested in some disinterested experts opinion on what this shows about strategy and tactics, and whether it shows anytihing about the validity of the rating system for these particular conditions. What accounts for the TCA apparent domination of the Spin class so far? Sailing, rating, or other?

This would be a wonderful teaching tool, and my congratulations to the creators.

I'm glad it's useful. The input of this community w/i the last couple of days has been very, very helpful and only makes the product better.

As far as the wind layers go -- yes, those are a booger to display as part of an animation since they are likely to change w/ every 2h hop unlike the SST. We pick one SST for the whole race and stick w/ it. My best advice is that if you want to see the winds animated w/ the boats that you manually click through each one so that your computer is saving them on your box. Then when you go back to animate, it doesn't have to hit the iboattrack server for new wind layers.

The wind layers will automatically ask for new winds and tracks after 15 minutes.

I'm not so sure how the powerpoint will do w/ this. Let me know. These interactive maps are pretty hard to capture on printer or anywhere outside of the browser.

That's why I'm hoping the individual boat reports w/ their tracks will meet most people's needs for now.

Happy racing!

TCA apparent domination of the Spin class

Postby SailBRacer » Sun Apr 30, 2006 3:21 pm

eae,

Great idea to create PP slides of the race, if you do create such a series please forward a copy to me.

Concerning the class difference, over the years some people have learned that the spinaker class is too dominated by hot race boats, so there chance of bringing home the hardware (trophies) goes up by hiding in another less competitive class, ha.
This year there is only 1 sport boat type, Tampa Girl, J120, but the long water line boats have kept her at bay and not run away with the race.

They don't have to have a crack spinaker crew and less expensive to equip the boat.
In many years I have done the race on a spinaker boat and never even put up the shute, other years when we never took it down. In 1994, on Wildside, we changed spinakers 3 times before we cleared the skyway bridge, each a different cut and weight.

Sometimes running a big jib with a reaching strut is faster than a shute, especially in heavy rolling seas, the shute gets overpowered, boat starts to roundup, loose the rudder, by then the stable reacher has passed you while your trying to get control again and backup to speed.

Each boat is supposed to keep a log of the trip, that is required to be turned in at the end of the race.
It would be nice if you could get a copy of this data they report and corrilate it to this software, like boat speed, wind dirrection, sail choice, weather conditions, etc.

See Ya....
