boat reports now have wind speed

Yacht race from Galveston to Veracruz beginning Friday, June 2nd, 2006.

boat reports now have wind speed

Postby cpurvis » Tue Jun 06, 2006 12:24 pm

Hi, folks:

If you haven't made it to a boat report, check out the latest addition. Visit the leaderboard and click on any boat name. Up will pop up a complete position report that now includes winds.

I will try to add the winds to the leaderboard, but it's getting a bit crowded, and I don't want to add any noise.

Any comments welcome.

WHY THE DIFF IN DISTANCE TO FINISH FROM THE BOAT MAPPER TO THE LEADER BOARD?

Can you give an example? The spot checking I just did seems to show identical matches.

The leaderboard is time-sensitive while the boat reports are not. In other words, the leaderboard will show you stats up to whatever time you've selected on the leaderboard. The boat report will show you everything in the system for the entire race up until now.

OKAY probably just misunderstanding the statistics
but blue has 35 nm to finish on boat mapper at 13:00 and 18.82 to finish on the leaderboard. I guess the leaderboard is making some adjustment?
or i am totally lost . Its the difference in the miles to finish that i dont understand.
thanks for your patience, and i love this thing

Thanks for *your* patience. We'd like to make this as unconfusing as possible, so if you're having a problem, someone else might as well.

But, of course, I can't seem to find it!

If I look at the both the interactive mapper and the quickmaps, Blue has 35 nm left to go. Both of them are showing me info for June 6 13:13 CDT.

And when I go to the leaderboard it is automatically set to the latest time 15:00 CDT, but I played w/ it a bit so that I could set it to 15:00 CDT myself. But in both cases, the same info was there:
Code: Select all
Jun 06 13:13 CDT
19°41'12" N 95°46'52" W
8.69 kts | 35.00 nm

If you're up for it, could you try documenting how you're running into the problem if it's anything like I described above?

Thanks!

cpurvis,

I think I know the source of confusion. I think guest is looking at the column that is called "estimated distance to finish" and then comaring that with the latest boat report, distance to finish. Maybe you could explain how that estimated distance to finish is calculated....I guessing that might be it...BTW i love this thing too....I can't seem to get much work done though!

Jeez. You'd think I would have picked up on that! Staring me right in the FACE.

Thanks for helping out!!!

Yes, Roger's got it. The estimated part of the dist. to finish is key. It is a calclulated figure while the dist. from finish that appears in the block w/ the latest reading was the exact dist. from finish at the time that position was taken. No calculations (sort of) there.

Getting back to the estimated part . . . it is computed based on the time you've selected in the leaderboard and the average daily boat speed. Once you combine those things, it interpolates them into a figure that we call estimated dist. from finish. It's this figure that the leaderboard rankings are based upon.

I hope that helps.

GPS on boat giving different readings than leaderboard

Postby Blonde » Tue Jun 06, 2006 5:04 pm

Well, I have a small question as well. I just got off the phone with Celestial Seas and they have 3 GPS's on board and all 3 are predicting arrival in 50 hrs as of 3:30 pm today. That would put them in Thurs evening or so, but on the leaderboard, it has them estimated to arrive at 6:45 am Sat morning. How can this be? They have not motored at all and are not planning on it given what the GPS says. It did agree thou on their distance away from the finish so I am just a little confused.

Thanks!

I am pretty sure my boat ain't thirsty....they have enough beer and quite a bit of my "signature rum punch" to last them for at least 7 days minimum. I will have my "signature drink" available once I get there prolly on Thurs if I can find a liquor store close (ha, this is Mexico...there better be plenty!!!). I don't fly in till late Wed night or I would have some sooner!
For the RC...are there any bribes....kinda like the "Jalapeno Race" from Race to the Border??? *wink wink* Thanks so much guys for a great race...things could be worse than calm seas and no wind....could be lots of storms and lots of sick people coming off those boats!!!!

In response to Blonde, I also will be on the plane with you and waiting paiently for my husband to arrive. Don't get your hopes up for a Thursday nite arrival if they choose not to power. They would have to maintain 6kts for 300 miles to get in by Thursday nite if my calculations are accurate. Also once they get south of 22 degrees the winds may be from the north at 10kts. If they are fast on a downwind run they will do great. The spinaker boats will love it if that happens. See you at the airport. I am also blonde.

Hey Blonde again, I took another look at Celestrial Seas and 5.5kts for 275km looks alot better than I previously thought.(not good at math ) Let's pray for no more high pressure.

I agree....and the boat will do ok with a north wind behind. They will go wing on wing possibly...it is a Hunter 40 and is carrying 80 gallons of fuel right now. It just needs to get the momentum going b/c it can go thru the waves and at least 10 knots N will be more than light and variable!!!

Feel free to call me...I have another post "For those flying down"

I will make some phone calls tonight. So far, I believe there are 4 other women for sure that are on the same flight. Which boat are you going to be "waiting patiently" for?
