Dolphin

Beginning Friday June 16, the Newport to Bermuda Race course is one of the most interesting and challenging ocean courses anywhere and depending on weather conditions the race can be won by big boats, small boats or boats in the middle of the fleet.

Let's go Dolphin!

Dolphin is a great boat with an exceptional leader and a TERRIFIC crew. Bring it home boys!!!!

I LOVE that we can watch this- it's a bit frustrating when updates don't work-
DOLPHIN: You are almost done!!! It's amazing... this entire board. EVERYONE is cheering friends and family on and creating SUCH energy!! I hope you can feel it!!!
Keep going guys- you are almost to Bermuda!! Aaron- Lauren has learned to track you and now she is cheering you on, too!!!
SEE YOU SOON!!! You are my hero!

Beats me...

Postby jeffthecyclist » Mon Jun 19, 2006 10:11 pm

Yeah, updating seems messed up. If I look at the tracking chart, there are no boats within the 100nm ring. If I check the Leader Board, several boats are within 100nm but the current map certainly doesn't depict that.

If I check the tracking of Dolphin, they are 153 out and Upbeat is 155 out as of 1800 and I did do the <CTRL>F5 refresh thing. If I check the Leader Board, Dolphin is 138 out and Upbeat is 143 out. I would think they use the same data but maybe not???

Everything is just inconsistient. Who knows where the heck they really are!

iBoatTrack queries the boats' transponders roughly every two hours, but not all transponders respond in the half second that they have to respond. A boat may be heeled over too far, someone might be sitting on the little bugger or a banana peel might have landed on it at just the wrong time. At the race committee's request, transponder readings are only posted 3 times a day--noon, 2000 hrs. and 0400 hrs. All this may contribute to inconsistent distances and times. Plus, some of the displayed data is just wrong, like the date being Dec. 13.

I would think that on the leader board, the "last reading" column related to the estimated distance to finish column but maybe not. That would explain the inconsistiency. However, if we have relatively current and accurate (ie, more than 3x a day) DTF info, what's the sense in not disseminating the rest of the info?

Either way, it appears that Dolphin made great progress last night. It looks like Upbeat has stale numbers in there so it's hard to say where they are.

Postby jeffthecyclist » Tue Jun 20, 2006 11:22 am

Hey Jess,

It looks like the Leader board was/is being updated. I see Dolphin in #2 for St David's light!

Dolphin is 37.46 out
Upbeat is 79.5 out
Mariah is 88.64 out

This is terribly addicting! At that rate, they should be getting in just over 5 hours from whenever that data is from.

You were sure correct, Jeff when you said Henry found the only wind out there.... At this rate they may be Number ONE... I hope it is accurate and I hope it keeps up!!!!
Keeping my fingers crossed!!!!

I still hate all of the inconsistiencies. I'm guessing the leader board Estimated DTF column is the only accurate column that is updated more frequently than every 8 hours. We have no way of knowing what time EDTF was actually calculated. I just checked the results page but nothing is showing up yet.

one more thing

For what it's worth, the Quick View seems more accurate than the tracker view; at least at the moment. You just can't get any details.
