Those are great quotes from Henry in the story.

Wow... so far, that's a fairly densely packed group of boats. Even Speedboat is still in the pack. Granted, the reporting time right now is only 14 hours into the race but it's still impressive.

Thers should be new numbers soon. Last info was around 0410 and we're 5.5 hours past that now so we're well over the 4 hour time.

Wow, looks like Dolphin could use some wind in her sails. 1.3 kts SSE and less than 1 foot seas. There's barely a gentle breeze out there.

I still can't quite figure out the 4 hour GPS transponder updates. Last update was at 8am and that was more than 6 hours ago.

cpurvis - I know tracking is supposed to be at 4 hour intervals for the first 48. Just curious -- does it change to a different interval after that? As always, thanks for your hard work! :D

The delay gives me a headache, too. The transponders are reporting every 2h, so if the transponder missed reporting (mostly due to not being able to have a clear view of the sky), then you won't see a report until 4 hours + 2 hours = 6 hours later, assuming it gets the next one.

I believe we were told to remove the delay after 48h.

Well, now I have to eat my words . . . the RC just told us that the 4h delay would remain for the length of the race.

Ok, thanks so much for the update!

Some truly amazing race start photos here: http://georgebekris.com/photos/swfpopup.mg?swfPop=true&noClickURL=true&url=http://georgebekris.com/Sailing-Regattas-1/Newport-to-Bermuda-Race-2010/12609405_weSdn#905921439_X2WWc

A quick scan of the 395 photos and I didn't see the Dolphin. Lots of pics of the big boats. I know some USNA people stop by this thread - I did see some of your boats towards the end (lower numbers, I think the numbering is backwards). Check them out!

Just checking in to say hi and that I'm watching the race with you all.

It's amazing that this will be the last race for the crew aboard Dolphin. I'm glad I had a chance to race with them once (Annapolis-Newport a bunch of years ago).

Hi Jeff,
Welcome back to the blog. You've been a faithful Dolphin fan. What a great article! Looks like Dolphin is not quite as far behind now...

Hi Kate Morgan,

Yes, it is good to see Dolphin making some headway now that they're past the gulf stream. Carina has been simply amazing. I'm not sure what their strategy was but it's worth a good look post race. Dolphin was 100nm behind Carina prior to entering the Gulf Stream but the gap has seen been closed to about 70nm. I know Ted was hoping to finish Tuesday. I think it will be close but they just may make it if conditions stay the same or better. I did notice Carina is now sailing directly on the rhumb line while Dolphin is the only SDL3 boat Northeast of the line. I'm not sure what Henry's strategy is there but it looks to me like he's taking a chance to find a slight advantage. I admire the strategy and the willingness to take the chance.

Yes, I'm a big fan. I've never seen Dolphin or met Henry but I enjoy tracking the race. I was hoping to watch and photograph a start one day but I didn't realize this was going to be my last chance. That's what I get for procrastinating!

Looking forward to the next update. Hope they continue to close the gap!
