I’m Robert Youens’ sister Judy. I will be the liaison for the discussion board.
When possible Robert will call me daily to check in, and I’m looking forward to lots of interesting questions to pass along. He begins his river trip Tuesday, September 16 – but if you have a question or comment, send them now and we’ll start a list.

It's Monday evening , about 8:00 pm. We're in northwestern Minnesota, about to take off on the longest river in the United States.
Robert's message: We have arrived at Lake Itasca - source of the Mississippi River. It's a cool night, mist rising off the lake and a big full moon. The river is narrow and winding here, but more water than usual is spilling from the lake so we should be able to start paddling sooner than we thought. Phone service is bad so we probably won't be in touch again until we reach Bemidji (a couple of days).
Judy's Question of the day: As they leave Lake Itasca, what direction are they traveling?

answer - question for the day 1: The Mississippi begins going north, then east. They won't turn south until they reach Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

I received a call from Mr. Youens today (Thursday. 9-18). Forwarded your messages and good wishes.

I had a question. If you look at the speed listed in the box above the map, it might say something like .7 kts.
1 knot per hour is equal to about 1.15 miles per hour. So we can think of knots as roughly mph. I asked why the web site said they were going so slow. It is because it tracks them from point to point, not taking all the twists and turns into consideration.

Before I post the Question for the Day, I need to make a correction. I called the Mississippi River the longest river in the United States. The source I was reading this week-end gives that honor to the Missouri River (it feeds into the Mississippi). The Mississippi is listed as the largest river in the United States.
